Get ready to experience the magic of Disney’s The Lion King Jr., brought to life by the talented students of Scotts Valley Middle School Friday and Saturday, Feb. 21 and Feb. 22, at 8 Bean Creek Road.
This 60-minute musical, adapted for middle school performers, tells the beloved story of Simba’s journey, featuring iconic songs and stunning visuals inspired by the Broadway production and the classic 1994 Disney film.
The production includes about 60 students, from cast to crew, with every role — onstage and behind the scenes — guided by Scotts Valley Middle School’s drama teacher and director, Alexie Neall.
“I knew this was going to be the show for this cast,” said Neall. “We had a small preview at the Multicultural Fair in September, and many of the cast members just happened to be in my class this trimester. My production team and I felt that this was our moment!”
The production dazzles with vibrant movement and dance, thanks to stunning choreography by Andy Stenros, Scotts Valley Middle School history teacher.
“Andy’s choreography brings such life and storytelling to the stage,” Neall said. “The students have truly connected with every step, and you can feel their joy and passion through every movement.”
The stunning character masks, from Simba’s regal mane to Scar’s menacing features are designed and created by 8th-grader Kara Saiki.
“Her designs are not only beautiful but deeply thoughtful — every mask tells a story,” Neall said. “The audience will be amazed by the talent and heart behind her creations.”
With breathtaking masks, elaborate props, and rich themes, The Lion King Jr. is one of the most technically challenging productions to grace the Scotts Valley Middle School stage. But for Neall, the show’s impact goes far beyond the technical elements.
“I wanted to bring one of the longest-running musicals on Broadway to our school because it’s more than a show — it’s a chance for our entire community to come together,” Neall said. “This story is about family, finding your voice, and embracing who you are. Our students are living those themes every day as they grow, collaborate, and create something truly magical together.”
Special thanks to Omega Nu of Santa Cruz for providing a new lighting system, installed only weeks ago with the help of the Scotts Valley Community Theater Guild.
“This incredible gift not only brightens our stage but also empowers our students to shine even brighter,” Neall said.
