On Nov. 15, at approximately 8:08 PM, a Santa Cruz Police Officer was in the area of the 2200 block of Mission Street dealing with an unrelated call, when gunshots were heard in the close vicinity.
The officer immediately broadcasted details of the situation, including possible suspect information, and requested additional units.
The scene of the shooting was located outside 841 Almar Avenue, where the officer located two injured civilians. The officer asked for medical assistance and began providing initial medical aid.
Several SCPD officers arrived shortly after to assist with the situation. SCPD Investigations was quickly notified and took control of the scene to begin a thorough investigation.
Through extensive and diligent investigative work, including the use of technology and a comprehensive review of evidence and witness statements, within one week of the original incident, SCPD Investigators were able to determine the incident was gang related and identify the suspect vehicle, and the two individuals involved in the shooting.
The suspects included Esdras Plascencia, 20, and a 16-year-old juvenile from Monterey County.
On Nov. 22, at approximately 6:30 PM, the Santa Cruz Police Department, with the assistance of the Santa Cruz County Anti-Crime Team (SCCACT), Watsonville Police Department (WPD), Santa Cruz County Auto Theft Reduction Enforcement (SCARE), and SCPD’s Emergency Services Unit, successfully arrested the 16-year-old juvenile within the city limits of Santa Cruz and an adult male suspect within the County of Santa Cruz.
The suspects are facing serious charges, including:
- 664/187PC: Attempted Homicide
- 246PC: Shooting at an Inhabited Dwelling or Occupied Vehicle
- 182PC: Conspiracy to Commit a Crime
Both victims in this case are still recovering from their injuries.
