In honor of World Ocean Day on June 8, California State Parks will publicly stream a live media event, connecting reporters with State Park scuba divers and education staff on Thursday, June 6, from Whalers Cove inside Point Lobos State Natural Reserve (SNR) in Carmel.
The underwater world will be shared live from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. by expert divers through live two-way audio and video communications.
These feeds will be incorporated into broadcasts for the public to view online and delivered directly into K-12 classrooms through the department’s Parks Online Resources for Teacher and Students (PORTS) ® Program.
The PORTS Program has been pioneering live video opportunities for K-12 students for twenty years and is now bringing the magical and mysterious underwater world to students who may have never visited the ocean.
In celebration of World Ocean Day and in collaboration with Microsoft’s Education Team and Zoom Video Communications, this year students will be able to learn about the thriving kelp forest ecosystem habitat at Point Lobos SNR and ask questions directly to the scuba divers.
