Voters in the City of Scotts Valley and the Loma Prieta Joint Union Elementary School District will have local measures to decide in the November 5, 2013 Special Election.
The measures to be placed on the November ballot are:
Loma Prieta’s Measure I: To support high academic achievement for local students and provide stable local funding to maintain outstanding core academic programs in reading, writing, math, and science, retain highly qualified and experienced teachers, and prepare students for an excellent high school shall the Loma Prieta Joint Union Elementary School District authorize an annual school parcel tax of $164 per parcel for seven years with independent citizens’ oversight, an exemption for seniors, no funds for administrator’s salaries and every dollar staying in our schools?
City of Scotts Valley Measure U: City of Scotts Valley Temporary Sales Tax. Shall a temporary one-half of one percent sales tax rate increase be approved for an eight year period to keep the budget balanced and to preserve police, parks, recreation and other city services for the residents of Scotts Valley?
Arguments for or against the school district measure must be filed by 5 p.m., Tuesday, August 13, 2013, with the Santa Cruz County Clerk/Elections Department, 701 Ocean St., Room 210, Santa Cruz, 831-454-2060, FAX: 831-454-2445 or the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters, 1555 Berger Dr., Building #2, San Jose, 408-299-8639, FAX: 408-998-7314.
Arguments for or against the City of Scotts Valley measure must be filed by 5 p.m. Thursday, August 22, 2013 with the Scotts Valley City Clerk, 1 Civic Center Drive, Scotts Valley, 831-440-5600, FAX: 831-438-2793.
Arguments must not exceed 300 words. In addition, arguments must be accompanied by a signed “Signature Statement” form available from the elections official or online at www.votescount.com. The form is contained in the “Guide to Writing Arguments” on the Santa Cruz County Elections Department’s website at www.votescount.com
Only one argument for and one argument against each measure will be printed in the Voter Information Pamphlet mailed to all registered voters in each jurisdiction by early October. Should more than one argument be filed, the elections official will choose one to appear in accordance with the law.
