Raising Boys in Today’s Society
Aptos High School, in partnership with Pacific Collegiate School, is hosting two screenings of the groundbreaking documentary film The Mask You Live In at the Aptos High School Performing Arts Center, 100 Mariner Way in Aptos.
The Mask You Live In is a groundbreaking film about how to raise a healthier generation of boys and young men. If a single film could change the way we raise boys, it might just be this one. For boys across America, living up to male stereotypes, burying emotions, and feeling alone is the norm.
The first screening on Wednesday, Sept. 30 is at full capacity with a waitlist. Seating is available for the 2nd screening on Wednesday, Oct. 21. Reservations are free to the public. This cutting-edge movie is appropriate for parents of both boys and girls. Men are encouraged to break the norm and show up for the viewing.

The film The Mask You Live In explores boys’ struggles to stay true to themselves while negotiating America’s limited view of masculinity. From emotional troubles to substance abuse to violence, society’s narrow definition of what it means to “be a man” is creating a host of unintended consequences for young men as individuals. The Mask You Live In exposes the problem and confronts it head-on, as experts in neuroscience, psychology, sociology, sports, education, and media, as well as boys and young males, weigh in to present evidence of what some are calling “the boy crisis” — and how to combat it.
Following the screening, there will be panel discussions facilitated by professionals in their field of expertise with Aptos High School Principal Casey O’Brien as the panel moderator. The 1st screening panel members include:
- Gina Castaneda — SC County Probation Officer
- Isaias Hernandez, ACSW — PVUSD Mental Health Clinician
- Mark Dorfman — Aptos High School Athletic Director
- Thomas Burke — Marriage Family Therapist
