A key pedestrian corridor along Main Street in Watsonville has reopened following completion of an emergency sidewalk repair project, local and state officials announced.
The Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission, Caltrans and City of Watsonville leaders marked the project’s completion, restoring access along State Route 152 after a section of sidewalk failed and partially collapsed into Struve Slough. The damage had forced a closure that disrupted a heavily used route in a neighborhood where many residents rely on walking and biking for daily travel.
Officials said the project underscores the importance of maintaining infrastructure that supports safe and equitable mobility.
“This project is a powerful reminder that infrastructure is not just about concrete and pavement—it’s about people,” Watsonville City Councilmember Casey Clark said in a statement. “When a critical sidewalk like this is lost, it disrupts daily life for residents who depend on safe, reliable walking routes.”
Clark added that restoring the corridor was essential to ensuring access to jobs, schools and services, and highlighted the need for continued investment in transportation systems that serve all residents.
Caltrans completed the repair by reconstructing the embankment with lightweight fill, installing sub-drains, and replacing the sidewalk, curb and gutter to improve long-term stability and safety.
The reopened sidewalk provides a vital link for pedestrians along Main Street, a corridor considered critical for connecting residents to everyday destinations. Officials said the closure had placed a significant burden on the community, emphasizing the urgency of restoring the route as quickly as possible.
Transportation leaders said the project reflects a broader commitment to equitable infrastructure improvements, particularly in communities where safe pedestrian access is essential for daily life.
